About Women In the Director’s Chair (WIDC)
Offering workshops, tailored mentorship, project development, production awards, and made-to-order outreach initiatives, WIDC builds community capacity where women screen directors can connect, collaborate, and create with professional Canadian actors, crew members, producers, industry executives, and audiences.
Since 1997, WIDC has advanced the creative and leadership skills, careers and fiction screen projects of more than 220 mid-career Canadian women storytellers working in motion picture, television and digital formats. Since attending WIDC, our alumnae have directed hundreds of hours of quality screen entertainment, including over 40 feature films. They have also created 6 dramatic network television series, 4 web series, and showrun over a dozen series. In the least ten years, 60% of the woman-directed feature films funded by Telefilm Canada were directed by WIDC alumnae. WIDC also has international alumnae directors from Australia, Israel, New Zealand, the UK, and USA.
WIDC is sustained through the generosity of public and private financial and in kind support, and administered by the national non-profit society, Creative Women Workshops Association (CWWA) based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
