Desiree Lim is a second generation Chinese born in Malaysia, and a Canadian citizen. A culturally diverse hybrid growing up in Malaysia and Japan, Desiree obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Sophia University in Tokyo. Desiree’s career in television started as Director and Associate Producer in news and documentary programs at the Japanese television network, TV Asahi and later at NHK in Tokyo. She has written, directed and produced documentaries, lifestyle shows and news segments for both Canadian and Japanese television since 1996, before moving into writing and directing drama in 2000. Desiree’s debut Japanese TV feature Sugar Sweet (writer/director)opened to sold-out audiences at major lesbian & gay (LGBT) film festivals in North America, across Europe and Asia. Desiree has found a home in both Vancouver and Tokyo.
Her first English TV drama Floored By Love (writer/director/producer) premiered at the New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in 2005, and was broadcast as part of CHUM’s (Canada) anthology series, 8 Stories About Love. Her films Sugar Sweet and Floored By Love are distributed by the oldest LGBT film distributor in the world, Wolfe Video (USA). Floored By Love was one of Wolfe’s bestselling DVDs and has been chosen by America’s largest LGBT magazine “The Advocate” as one of the Top 10 LGBT DVDs for the year 2005. Desiree has found a solid fan base in the LGBT audience through her work.
Desiree was a director participant of the Women In Director’s Chair Workshop and National Screen Institute’s Features First, both in Canada. Desiree has received numerous film grants including Telefilm Canada’s Writer’s First. Desiree’s latest award-winning film is a psychological thriller titled The House filmed in Vancouver, starring some of the city’s top actors. The House won Best Screenwriting and Best Canadian Feature Awards from Female Eye Film Festival (Toronto).
Fluent in English, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay, Desiree continues to transcend geographical and cultural borders to breathe life and give voice to the unique and original stories she has to tell.
